Ryan Beatty is officially making the transition from YouTube sensation to recording artist. The sixteen-year-old California singer is releasing his first EP “Because Of You” July 24, and he can’t quite believe his luck.
“I’m getting to work with some really amazing people,” Beatty tells us.
The soulfully voiced teen co-wrote the songs on the EP with John Fields and Shelly Peiken (a Grammy nominee known for turning out hits for Christina Aguilera).
"This EP is kind of like a bridge into the album,” Says Beatty, who hopes to have a full-length out by the end of the year. “I really want to get something out for the fans.”
Since bursting onto the music scene with covers posted on YouTube, Beatty has attracted a sizable online following. His YouTube channel has 230,000 subscribers and his videos have received 30 million views. All of this propelled him to a Teen Choice Awards nomination this year in the web star category.
But success isn’t going to his head.
“I don’t consider myself famous. I don’t really like the word famous because it doesn’t seem like I am,” Beatty says. “I’m just Ryan.”
Beatty’s YouTube origins have seen him dubbed “the next Justin Bieber,” in some press accounts, but he has more in common musically with his singer-songwriter idol James Taylor.
Beatty has an affinity for tunes created decades before his birth (he counts receiving sage advice from Beach Boy Al Jardine among his career highlights), and prides himself on using real instruments on his recordings and his live shows.
“This EP will give people an idea of what my musical style is,” Beatty says. “It’s singer- songwriter kind of, but it still has a fun upbeat to it.”
He will preview songs from his EP at a live show at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles July 17. Teen pop group Cimorelli is slated to open, and tickets can be purchased at TicketWeb.
“The band I’m working with is super talented,” says Beatty of his first major live performance of the year. “It’s going to be my best show yet.”
